Featured Athlete: Titus Faber

Titus has become a fixture at South Seattle CrossFit. It’s pretty much a given that Titus will be in the gym at least once a day, but can often be found popping back by a second time for more work. Titus is amongst a handful of SSCF members that are CrossFit Level 1 certified and has started coaching some classes here and there. His knowledge, enthusiasm and caring attitude have made Titus a tremendous asset to the SSCF community and we are happy to call him one of our own. Learn more about Titus in his own words!
1.) Why do you love CrossFit?
I have not been a strong athlete for most of my life. However, after trying several methods of getting in shape I found that the combination of measurable goals as well as a good community makes CrossFit what really “clicks” for me.
2.) Why do you love SSCF?
The community. I have never found such a welcoming group of people from all walks of life. This comes from the coaches first – every coach has been accepting, kind and helpful. I start every workout with people who are positive and encouraging, and every workout ends with the same attitude, albeit a bit more out of breath.
3.) How has CrossFit changed your life?
My goals in life have always centered around being “happy with today” – not regretting mistakes, liking who I am, and loving everyone who surrounds me. CrossFit has fit that criteria very well. It has made me fit enough to do anything that comes up in life (hike that mountain? sure!). It has given me self-confidence to like who I am more every day. It helps me by making me know that tomorrow I will be as healthy as possible to enjoy the people I love … all while enjoying today (yeah, I like the workouts – they feel like “progress”).
CrossFit is not my end-all of goals, but it has been a very positive experience and impact in my life.
4.) What is your favorite healthy meal?
Define healthy! :)
Hmm … pineapple bacon chilli. Or sushi. Or good Thai. So much good food out there!
5.) What is your favorite “cheat” food?
Candy. Anything more specific would have to depend on the day … but cinnamon bears are a great start.
6.) What is your favorite CrossFit movement/WOD
Fran. I hate thrusters, but there is something about a workout so short that can knock me on my butt for so long.
7.) Which CrossFit movement/WOD makes you want to run and hide?
Wall balls … though they’re getting better. I think. I would have picked running for this one, but that is a bad relationship that goes back well before my days in a CrossFit gym.
8.) What do you do for fun outside of CrossFit?
I am a true nerd at heart. If I have enough free time I am a sucker for sci-fi, or video games. And, I have to admit, reading about new technology (I’m talking about petabyte re-indexing theories here, not just Apple goodies).
9.) What are your fitness/life goals?
I would love to make the masters 45-49 games … or at least make the masters qualifier. I know that’s a dream, but a guys gotta dream ya know (and workout a lot)? Outside of that lofty goal, my more realistic and more important goal to me is to be able to do at least one pull-up at age 90. I’m in this for the long-haul, which is why my personal first rule in any activity is, “no injuries”.
10.) How did you hear about South Seattle CrossFit?
My first time hearing about the gym was taking the Level 1 certification a couple years ago with McKenzie. Much more recently as I was switching jobs to work from home here in West Seattle, I ran into someone at Metropolitan Market while getting coffee. He and I talked about gyms and working out – he said I should stop by. If life throws two people two years apart at you who are so nice with a common thread, it certainly is worth at least seeing what else there is to the story. So … here I am!
*I’m not sure about petabyte re-indexing theories, but I think pineapple bacon chilli is something we can all rally around : )! We look forward to being right by your side on your quest for the Masters Games, my friend…no doubt, you can make it happen, though your goal of one pull-up at age 90 is just as inspiring!

Featured Athlete: Nick Snyder

Nick is still fairly new to South Seattle CrossFit (and the city of Seattle in general), having joined in February of 2015 after moving cross country from Boston. Since we have known Nick, he has been completely dedicated to his health and fitness, both inside and outside of the gym. Case in point, when we texted Nick to notify him that he had been chosen as SSCF’s Featured Athlete for March/April ’15 his response started with, “Just got back from a run…” Mind you, it was 10:15pm on a Sunday night! Nick’s responses to our questions are thoughtful, funny and inspiring…please take a moment to learn more about Nick in his own words!

1.) Why do you love CrossFit?

CrossFit is great because of the flexibility, fluidity, and intensity that it provides. I never get bored with the movements or the exercises because they vary so much from workout-to-workout. Sometimes you use weights, sometimes you use your own body weight, and sometimes it’s purely about being agile and fast. The competitive aspect is also super appealing to me. By keeping score, it’s easy to compete against yourself—and sometimes your fellow classmates without them knowing—to give you that extra push of motivation.

2.) Why do you love SSCF?

I decided to try SSCF because they offer beginner’s classes that teach you all about proper technique without weights—being safe is very important to me. I chose (and love) SSCF because of the people. I’ve told many people that SSCF is Seattle Freeze–proof: from the first day I showed up and saw Ryan snatching a ridiculous amount of weight to my first class when I was absolutely terrified, everyone I’ve encountered has been warm smiles, kind words, and encouragement. SSCF roots for me.

3.) How has CrossFit changed your life?

I joined CrossFit after moving across the country to a place where I barely knew anyone. SSCF—and CrossFit, by extension—gave me all the resources to feel like I was part of a community again. There’s also the physical rewards, which has given me loads of confidence and has started to change my body in ways that I only dreamed were possible.

4.) What is your favorite healthy meal?

One of my favorite discoveries in the past couple of years has been the lettuce burrito wrap. A poached egg, avocado, and turkey bacon wrapped in a lettuce burrito is next-level delicious.

5.) What is your favorite “cheat” food?

The Unholy Triforce of vanilla ice cream, waffles, and maple bacon donuts.

6.) What is your favorite CrossFit movement/WOD

People will think that I’m crazy, but I really enjoy snatches. It’s such a complex and odd movement that happens so quickly and works so many muscle groups.

7.) Which CrossFit movement/WOD makes you want to run and hide?

Any time I see pull-ups on the board, I go through the classic five stages of grief. I really hate that I can’t do an unassisted pull-up yet, but I’m so much closer now than I’ve ever been. I get a little better each day and I know that the day I do my first one will be worth all the humble pie that I’ve been eating.

8.) What do you do for fun outside of CrossFit?

I’m a huge baseball fanatic and will do anything to be involved, but I especially love getting out on the field and playing pick-up games. I’m also a long-distance runner and will be competing in my first half-marathon this September, with the hopes of running my first full-length marathon in 2016.

9.) What are your fitness/life goals?

On April 24, 2011, a doctor scared the absolute Hell out of me by painting a picture of my future with hard numbers. His matter-of-fact, nonjudgmental approach inspired me to change the way that I lived by cutting out non-organic food and by introducing fitness into my life. It’s four years later and I have lost a total of 125lbs. I want to keep getting stronger and keep pushing the limits of my what my body can do. I don’t ever want to get into a situation again where I can’t physically do something because I chose to eat donuts instead. I also have an, admittedly, vain goal of not being ashamed to take my shirt off in public. The movements in CrossFit are ideal for building muscle and tightening up skin.

10) How did you hear about South Seattle CrossFit?

The Googles showed me the way! I was pushed to try CrossFit by a friend from Boston, Niki Brown, who used CrossFit to change his life. It took me moving from Boston to Seattle, but I eventually tried it, Niki!

*Obviously, Nick isn’t above a little bribery with the mention of Ryan snatching a ridiculous amount of weight…well played, Nick…hah! All kidding aside, Nick congrats to you for your commitment to your overall health and well-being. You are an inspiration and we look forward to following your progress on your first 1/2 marathon in September and no doubt that a full-length marathon is in your future. Thank you to both Niki Brown, and The Googles, for allowing Nick to find the doors to SSCF!!

Feautured Athlete: Hannah Russell

Since walking through the doors of SSCF, Hannah has become a total gym rat – and we mean that as a big compliment!! Hannah has diligenty gone to work improving both her skills and strength, especially in her Oly lifts. Hannah has participated in a handful of CrossFit competitions as an athlete and always comes to the gym w/ a great attitude. Learn more about Hannah in her own words!

1.) Why do you love CrossFit?

Because it’s like being on a team again. The WODs may tend to be independent workouts, but with everyone cheering and showing their support, you never feel like you’re actually doing them alone. The community and family aspect of CrossFit is the best.

2.) Why do you love SSCF?

The people. Everyone there makes you feel so welcome every day, and it’s not just like that at the gym but outside of the gym as well. I find myself wanting to spend more time at the gym to not only workout but to hangout with everyone too. Everyone are friends both inside and outside of the gym and that’s what I think really separates SSCF from other gyms.

3.) How has CrossFit changed your life?

Working out for me started with crew and realizing that I really had the power to change my body with food and exercise. CrossFit is teaching me how to make my body stronger…working out just makes me happy.

4.) What is your favorite healthy meal?

It changes every week. I love discovering new foods. Right now it’s the paleo coconut and chocolate cookie, and turning zucchini into pasta noodles. I absolutely love Justin’s Maple Almond butter…I could eat a jar every week!

5.) What is your favorite “cheat” food?

Southern butter-pecan gelato is a definite weakness for me.

6.) What is your favorite CrossFit movement/WOD

I really love kettle bell swings, double-unders and box jumps – specifically box jump overs always sound like fun. If I had a favorite WOD it would probably be just a combination of those three movements.

7.) Which CrossFit movement/WOD makes you want to run and hide?

Thrusters. The push press and squat combination just kills me.

8.) What do you do for fun outside of CrossFit?

Fun, what is that? School, work, CrossFit…that pretty much sums up my life. When I do have a spare minute I love to treat myself by shopping for spandex or getting my nails done. I also enjoy the occasional hike with my sister and our dog.

9.) What are your fitness/life goals?

I have a TON…just a few of them are to get my handstand pushups, dips and then getting muscle-ups. That would be awesome!

10.) How did you hear about South Seattle CrossFit?

From the one and only Kayla George.

* I mean, who doesn’t like shopping for spandex, we ask? Thank you to the one-and-only Kayla George for bringing Hannah into our wonderful community! Hannah, not only would getting your muscle-ups be awesome, it WILL be awesome, because it’ll happen for you!

Featured Athlete: Maureen Walum

Maureen joined SSCF in August and along with her husband, Steve, has been coming in on a regular basis ever since. Maureen has made huge strides in terms of strength, flexibility and overall fitness over the past half year. Maureen and Steve can typically be found working out with one of our evening classes. Learn more about Maureen in her own words…

1.) Why do you love CrossFit?

I decided to start doing CrossFit because I wanted to improve my upper body strength. I walk a lot, but felt like I needed additional strength training exercise. I know I have a long way to go, but feel like I am much stronger than when I started. It really has become a big part of our life…we hate to schedule anything else when it’s a CrossFit night.

2.) Why do you love SSCF?

Steve and I love SSCF because Chris and Jen have both been great to us. They are very patient with us and really work to modify workouts when necessary. We also really enjoy the other people that attend – everyone is very friendly and encouraging, and will cheer us on even when it doesn’t feel possible to do another Burpee!

3.) How has CrossFit changed your life?

I would have to say that I feel better, both physically and emotionally. It feels good to have started a program like this and to have stayed committed. It’s also very rewarding to have found an exercise program that both Steve and I enjoy doing together. There are times when we don’t feel like going, but we are always glad that we did…especially once the workout is over! I feel stronger and am always pleased when I can do something that I was unable to do when we started CrossFit.

4.) What is your favorite healthy meal?

Halibut, fresh roasted asparagus and a really good salad!

5.) What is your favorite “cheat” food?

Macaroni and cheese with Beechers cheese plus Fontina and Swiss cheese…totally decadent!!

6.) What is your favorite CrossFit movement/WOD?

I like Deadlifts and also like the fact I can generally lift more than when we started doing CrossFit. I also really enjoy Kettlebell exercises.

7.) Which CrossFit movement/WOD makes you want to run and hide?

Burpees!! and Double Unders.

8.) What do you do for fun outside of CrossFit?

We are boaters, so we spend as much time as possible on our boat. When we are on the boat, I love to slip into the water and kayak. We also have a great dog, and I enjoy long walks with her. We have a lot of friends that we enjoy spending time with…we belong to a dinner club in which we take turns going to each other’s house and doing a dinner together. I love to cook. We also love spending time with our five wonderful grandchildren along with a 17 month-old niece.

9.) What are your fitness/life goals?

I want to stay as active and fit as I can for as long as I can. I want to be around to see my grandchildren grow and be able to do things with them. I really just want to be healthy and strong, and I know that it takes work and commitment to make that happen.

10.) How did you hear about South Seattle CrossFit?

We live close to West Seattle CrossFit and when I was walking our dog I used to see them working out, and thought I would like to try that type of training program. Then, one Sunday, I was at the West Seattle Farmer’s Market and saw a woman wearing a SSCF sweatshirt. I started talking to her and asked her about the gym and the training program. She spoke very highly of everyone and how great the SSCF coaches were at working with members to ensure the workouts could be modified if necessary. So, we decided to give it a try, joined soon after, and have not regretted our decision at all!

*We’re not sure who this mystery person was, wearing their SSCF hoodie at the Farmer’s Market, but we would like to say thanks for steering both Maureen and Steve our way. Their dedication, commitment and enthusiasm has been evident and contagious. Keep up the great work in 2015 Maureen (and you too, Steve)!

Featured Athlete: Tom McGraw

Tom McGraw joined South Seattle CrossFit just over a year ago, and the guy has been a mainstay ever since. It’s a rare day that Tom misses, and that’s saying something since Tom works out before his work day starts with the 530a class. He has dropped over 30 lbs since joining SSCF and has helped in a variety of ways behind the scenes to improve SSCF! Learn more about Tom in his own words…

1.) Why do you love CrossFit?

CrossFit has made me step back and look at my life. I know that I need to better myself and CrossFit gives me the ability to do so.

2.) Why do you love SSCF?

The trainers here at SSCF are very nice and easy to get along with. With this and the closeness of the gym to work for me make SSCF a good fit.

3.) How has CrossFit changed your life?

It has made me stop and look at my habits and life style.
It has helped with some of the old aches and pains, which don’t feel quite so bad anymore.
It has also brought on new aches and pains, but in a good way.

4.) What is your favorite healthy meal?

No favorite healthy meal, but I do prefer meals with meat.

5.) What is your favorite “cheat” food?

Pizza and Beer MMMMMMM Beer

6.) What is your favorite CrossFit movement/WOD

Any of the lifting is OK. I am not a speed person, so lifting is definitely my preferred movement.

7.) Which CrossFit movement/WOD makes you want to run and hide?

Thrusters, front squats, pull-ups, burpees, etc…….
Maybe not hide, but curse slightly.

8.) What do you do for fun outside of CrossFit?

I enjoy being with my family and doing things with them.
Kids’ sports, walking the dog with my family, and such.

9.) What are your fitness/life goals?

To lose about 30 more pounds and maintain. I have lost about 30+ so far!

10) How did you hear about South Seattle CrossFit?

Lashanna, at work, signed us up and I’m still here a year later.

* We are thankful fellow SSCF member, Lashanna Williams, dragged Tom and the rest of the Lafarge crew to SSCF as that group has been the heart and soul of our 530a class for some time now. Tom isn’t lying when he says he enjoys spending time with his family…his wife and son, Deb & Bo, also joined SSCF making the early morning class time a family affair. Congrats Tom and keep up the great work!!
